How to Break Through Smoothly with a Subversive Natural Science Theory
Sun Zuodong

Looking back at the entire history of natural science, an unchanging law stands clear: All breakthrough research that refreshes human cognition and reconstructs the scientific system naturally belongs to the non-consensus category. Regardless of professional background or academic circle, any work that breaks inherent paradigms and transcends current mainstream boundaries must endure long periods of incomprehension, neglect, and rational debate.

This is the objective fate of scientific evolution—not about individuals, but about the leap of civilizational cognition.

Throughout the history of science, precedents are clear.Copernicus reconstructed the cosmic order, breaking millennia of fixed beliefs; he pursued truth quietly all his life but was rejected by the prejudices of his era.Mendel delved deeply into the laws of heredity; his insights were decades ahead of his time, yet his work was long buried behind consensus barriers.Wegener founded the continental drift theory with a complete logical framework and solid supporting evidence, but suffered long-term collective rejection by academia.Darwin reshaped our understanding of life evolution, subverting established secular doctrines; controversy and recognition coexisted for a century.

Even top researchers deeply embedded in the mainstream academic system cannot escape this objective law. McClintock’s pioneering work on genetic transposition, rigorous in experiment and objective in argument, was marginalized for a long time simply because it departed from the mainstream research track.

This has been true in all times and nations.

All scientific exploration that is subversive and future-leading must pass through consensus barriers and stand the test of time. This is the necessary journey for all pioneers.

I have been engaged in basic theoretical research and practice in brain science for more than 30 years. After long-term study, accumulation, and objective observation, I sincerely appreciate the stable and progressive development of our country and the inclusive, open environment of our era. A prosperous, peaceful, law-abiding, and culturally advancing society provides broad space for every pure scientific pursuit and every independent academic reflection.

Based on years of research insights and the laws of scientific development, I share from an objective, impartial, and pragmatic perspective a set of academic and life principles suitable for all non-consensus researchers, leaving a sustainable, practicable, and far-reaching reference for future independent explorers and scientific thinkers.

I. Respect the Rules of the Academic Community, Uphold Integrity, and Act Within Bounds

Dale Carnegie once said: “If you want honey, do not kick over the beehive.”

This philosophy of life is also the fundamental principle that non-consensus research must abide by. Every academic field has public order, writing norms, and value consensus formed through long-term accumulation. Maintaining breakthrough thinking and holding non-consensus views is the driving force of scientific progress, but independent exploration does not equal disorderly recklessness; independent views do not equal disregard for rules.

We should respect the basic etiquette and general paradigms of the academic community, adhere to the fundamental principles of standardized academic expression, rigorous logical deduction, and systematic literature tracing, establish ourselves through professional writing, and participate in academic discourse with a rational attitude.

Respecting rules is by no means blind conformity to fixed routines; upholding bottom lines is not passive attachment to circles. Do not actively create confrontation, deliberately offend groups, make groundless criticisms, engage in malicious slander, or wantonly break the inherent order and balance of the industry and academia. Meanwhile, maintain independent judgment, keep research sovereignty, bypass barriers, forge new paths, and not be bound by the submission logic of single journals or constrained by rigid circle rules.

Paradigms can be followed, but routines need not be catered to; norms must be upheld, but paths can be chosen independently.

Publication is the ultimate truth; documentation is the ultimate truth. There is no need to blindly pursue high impact factors or single evaluation systems. As long as research is legally published, time-stamped, and academically documented, it becomes the most solid and reliable foundation for independent research.

With measure in the heart, restraint in action, and boundaries in speech, one can go steadily and far in a complex environment.

II. Cherish Awe and Gratitude, Live Peacefully, and Maintain Rational Self-Control

To pursue scholarship, first establish character; to establish character, first cultivate the mind.

Life choices are autonomous, academic paths are self-selected. There is no natural tolerance or accommodation in the world. Always be grateful and reverent, not complaining, paranoid, or negative. Calmly accept the loneliness inherent in non-consensus research, and rationally view the estrangement caused by cognitive differences.

Abandon extreme words, stay away from hostile disputes, and do not get involved in meaningless circle confrontations and ideological conflicts. Focus on science itself, concentrate on mechanism exploration, logical dialectics, and fact verification. Live with a low-key and calm attitude, pursue scholarship with an inclusive and modest vision, stand on your own feet, behave properly, accumulate strength in quietness, and build foresight through restraint.

III. Cultivate Self-Discipline and Strengthen the Foundation: Secure Livelihood First, Then Pursue Wisdom, Then Pursue Truth

Self-discipline is a lifelong required course for scholars and the core foundation for long-term commitment to basic research.

After decades of life experience and research practice, I have always adhered to a simple and eternal truth of scholarship: secure livelihood first, then pursue wisdom, then pursue truth.

Material well-being is the solid foundation for all spiritual exploration and academic dedication. Basic theoretical research has a long cycle, complex argumentation, and delayed value transformation—like the evolution from seed to ripe fruit, it takes a long journey and heavy accumulation, and is difficult to realize immediate practical value. Talking about academic ideals without real-world foundations, or obsessing over obscure exploration while neglecting life responsibilities, cannot sustain in-depth, long-term, and high-dimensional scientific research after all.

Do not give up, sink into despair, or detach from real life. First fulfill family duties, stabilize life foundations, and build solid practical security. Only then can you have a calm mind, sufficient confidence, and spare energy to read widely, enhance wisdom, investigate things to understand principles, devote yourself to pursuing truth, and chase higher academic ideals.

In academic pursuit, one must also understand the underlying wisdom of acting in accordance with trends and moving in the same direction. High-level academic exploration is never groundless imagination detached from personal experience, professional background, and practical accumulation. Research directions should highly align with one’s professional field, practical track, and cognitive accumulation. Based on the industry you deeply cultivate, relying on long-term practical knowledge, choose topics that fit your experience, explore in line with your track, and connect ideals with reality.

When direction aligns, knowledge and action integrate; when track matches, effort multiplies; when acting with trends, progress endures. Obsessive exploration disconnected from fields often drains energy, deviates from origin, and ultimately fails to achieve great goals.

Those who pursue truth alone must uphold scholarly integrity and personal dignity. Do not complain, beg for sympathy, or create a tragic “weak” image. True scientific pioneers always stand on independence and take self-strengthening as their backbone.

Throughout the history of human civilization, many wise sages at all times and in all countries balanced real-life security and spiritual pursuit. They built a solid livelihood foundation and reached academic peaks, achieving dual success in reality and ideals.

Li Shizhen rooted in his medical practice, supported the compilation of classics with his life-saving career; medical practice and research grew together, finally producing the great Compendium of Materia Medica.Faraday grounded himself in industrial practice, empowered theoretical breakthroughs with practical experience; industrial foundation and scientific exploration complemented each other, pioneering the electromagnetic era.Cao Xueqin, with rich life experience and stable livelihood, penetrated the essence of humanities, wrote down his thoughts, and preserved an eternal literary legacy.

Times differ and fields vary, but the great path is the same: a stable life foundation, upright personal conduct, and solid real-world support are prerequisites for all long-term academic breakthroughs, ideological innovations, and theoretical reconstructions.

Unstable foundation leads to unsteady pursuit of truth; disordered life hinders deep research.

Many current explorers put the cart before the horse: neglecting livelihood responsibilities, ignoring real-life duties, choosing research topics detached from their accumulation, and pursuing directions deviating from their tracks. Trapped in isolated research, they eventually fall into real distress and mental exhaustion—failing to break academic barriers or settle into daily life, losing more than they gain.

Passion for science deserves perseverance, academic ideals deserve pursuit, but basic research must not become a heavy burden that drags down families, consumes lives, and detaches from reality. Straighten out the priorities between reality and ideals, main career and interest, survival and truth-seeking. Stand in the world through self-strengthening, cultivate yourself through self-discipline, understand principles through self-reflection. Only then can long-term non-consensus exploration gain continuous endogenous strength.

IV. Endure the Loneliness of the Era, Focus on Accumulation, and Wait for Time to Be Fair

No subversive theory that rewrites scientific progress and shapes humanity’s future can be achieved quickly.

Abandon impetuous utilitarianism, stay away from the disturbance of empty fame and short-term gains, recognize the essential nature of non-consensus research, and accept periodic coldness and silence. Calm your mind to refine logic, improve arguments day by day, and gradually build a complete system.

Scientific cognitive iteration always lags behind forward-thinking of the era. Copernicus’s cosmology and Mendel’s genetics were dusted for years before finally being recognized by civilization.

There is no shortcut to the great path; perseverance is precious in pursuing truth. Truly historically valuable scientific breakthroughs will eventually shed prejudice and reveal essence through the tempering of time.

V. Communicate Gently and Rationally, Progress Step by Step, and Coexist Inclusively

On the premise of compliance and order, rationally participate in various academic exchanges, share research thoughts peacefully, output academic views objectively, do not strive for dominance, deliberately seek novelty, or force debate. Resolve misunderstandings through communication, bridge estrangement with rationality, and promote cognition through inclusiveness.

There is no need to deliberately cater to circles or force integration into consensus. Maintain independent integrity, keep moderate boundaries, penetrate gently, and let nature take its course.

Looking at the context of human scientific development, it is not hard to see: thinkers who truly possess the ability to reconstruct systems and dare to examine the underlying logic of disciplines have always been rare.

Rooted in practical soil for a long time, relying on professional accumulation, establishing yourself through industry, verifying with practice, and pursuing far-reaching goals with theory. Maintain independence in thought, personality, and cognition. Uphold bottom lines within rules, seek paths beyond barriers. Move forward slowly with restrained calm, not building momentum with sharpness, not gaining fame with tragedy.

Over the past century, many major breakthroughs that rewrote human cognition began as temporary non-consensus and succeeded through long-term rational accumulation. The inherent cognition of an era can limit individuals temporarily, but the value of truth, the power of logic, and the proof of practice will eventually cross circles, regions, and time to gain an objective, fair, and historically sustainable conclusion worldwide.

In the current era, information is universally interconnected, cognition is diverse and open, scientific interpretation is no longer monopolized by a few circles, and truth has broader space to spread.

Regardless of professional background, as long as you adhere to rule bottom lines, uphold self-discipline, cherish gratitude for the era, base yourself on reality, pursue exploration in accordance with trends, conduct scholarship rationally, and seek truth calmly—grounded in objective facts, supported by rigorous logic, witnessed by long years—avoiding extremism and wrong paths, you will cultivate steadily.

All non-consensus explorations that break era cognition and rewrite the scientific landscape will eventually cross circle barriers, break consensus shackles, and be permanently engraved in the progress of human civilization and science by virtue of their rigorous value.
